About us
A scute is armor that grows
A scute is one of the bony plates that make up a turtle's shell. It isn't bolted on — it grows with the animal, layer by layer, its whole life. That felt like the right name for what we're trying to give kids: not a wall around them, but armor of their own that gets thicker with every challenge they face.
Where we come from
Esports showed us the problem first
We come from esports at the highest level of play — a world that introduced us to online scams targeting gamers early, because the scams came straight to us. Not a week goes by without one of us getting a Discord message from the account of a player or coach we know that has been compromised and is now trying to spread malware to everyone who trusts it.

Then we watched artificial intelligence get persuasive and cryptocurrencies get popular, and the direction was obvious: scams of every kind are becoming cheaper to run, better written, and harder to spot. Enabled by these technologies, they no longer aim only at companies with security budgets. Everyone is a target now.
The questions that started it
Companies get workshops. Then what?
Who helps the families?
Companies run cybersecurity workshops for their employees. But a scam that costs almost nothing to run doesn't stop at the office door — it lands in family group chats, kids' DMs, and grandparents' inboxes, where there is no IT department to call.
What does "stranger danger" even mean online?
How do you teach kids about stranger danger when their favorite games normalize playing with strangers — teammates who could be kids their age or grown men, with nothing but a username and a voice to tell the difference?
Why ScuteSense
The same craft, pointed the other way
These questions led us to start ScuteSense — not to teach cybersecurity and online safety like a boring workshop, but to gamify it. Games are the craft we know best, so we simply turned it around:
we taught players to be elite at video games.
we use video games to teach families elite knowledge of cybersecurity and online safety.
